Valkoinen kaupunki Merida - Merida, the White City

Yucatanin osavaltion pääkaupunki Merida tunnetaan myös lempinimellä Ciudad Blanca eli valkoinen kaupunki. Tämä ei kuitenkaan viittaa rakennusten väriin, sillä suurin osa etenkin vanhan kaupungin siirtomaavallan aikaisista rakennuksia on kauniin värikkäitä eikä suinkaan valkoisia. Nimen sanotaan juontavan juurensa joko rakennusten aiemmasta väristä tai kaupungin poikkeuksellisesta puhtaudesta, josta asukkaat ovat kovin ylpeitä. Oli syy mikä hyvänsä, Merida vaikutti heti kovin viehättävältä kaupungilta, jossa vietimme kolme yötä hengaillen rennosti ilman sen kummempia suunnitelmia. Majailimme kivassa majatalossa ihan vanhan kaupungin sydämessä, josta oli muutaman minuutin kävelymatka pääaukiolle Plaza Grandelle.

Plaza Grande

Montejon suvulla olikin iso rooli monien Yucatanin niemimaan kaupunkien rakentamisessa.

Dia de los muertos celebrations in Merida

The capital of Yucatan state, Merida, is also known by its nickname Ciudad Blanca or white city. However this name does not refer to the colour of the buildings, as most of them, especially in the old town, are nice and colourful colonial buildings. The name may refer to the previous colour of the buildings or the cleanliness that the residents are so proud of. Whatever the origin of the name, the city struck me right away as a charming place to spend a few days in without any particular plans. Our nice little guest house was also an example of the colonial architecture the city is known for and located in the heart of the old city, within a few minutes' walk from the main square Plaza Grande.

Murals at Palacio Gobierno

On our first morning there we decided to take a free guided walking tour organized by the tourism office as we figured it's always a good way to get to know a place. The guide was a slightly amusing old guy whose English was so heavily accented that we didn't understand a word of the English commentary - luckily it was also in Spanish which was a lot easier to understand. It was really interesting to learn that the Spanish conquistadores built most of the historical centre from the materials from the Mayan pyramids (meaning they made the Mayas demolish their pyramids and then forced them to build new buildings from the same stones). The walking tour was just around the Plaza Grande which is surrounded by gorgeous historical buildings, such as the cathedral of San Ildofonso (the oldest church in the Americas), Palacio de Gobierno (government palace) and the oldest surviving house in the Yucatan, Casa de Montejo, which you can visit for free. The Montejo family had a big role in founding several cities across the Yucatan. Also Palacio Municipal is a fascinating place to visit, in particular to see the murals depicting the Mayan views of the cosmos. Plaza Grande is a pleasant park in itself with lots of music and other stuff going on especially in the evenings.

Sometimes I just feel small...

Plaza Granden lisäksi Meridassa on paljon muitakin kivoja aukioita, kuten Santa Lucian aukio, jossa on joka torstai ilmainen konsertti "Serenata Yucateca".

Paseo de Montejo, the European-style boulevard named after Montejo, is where you will find the most impressive houses of the city. It makes for a pleasant stroll or alternatively you can hire a bike. Apart from Plaza Grande there are plenty of other nice squares in Merida, for example Santa Lucia where a free concert "Serenata Yucateca" takes place every Thursday. The concert started at 9pm and the square was absolutely packed with people already an hour before. Luckily we managed to find a free bench so we could enjoy a show of romantic ballads and traditional dancing.

At the hacienda

On our last day in Merida we wanted to do a day trip and since we had already been to Chichen Itza and next we were headed to the fishing village of Celestun, we opted for "Haciendas y cenotes" tour where we got to visit old colonial estates. Most of these estates were for growing henequen, an agave whose fiber was used for making ropes etc. Before the synthetic fibers were developed, henequen brought in major profits, especially as they used Mayans as work force in slave-like conditions, so the Spanish colonial masters became richer and richer, building bigger and more lavish haciendas around Yucatan. On this tour we visited first a hacienda that now functions as a museum, then a cenote for a swim (this time it was much more pleasant than in Tulum, as it was hot!) and headed to another hacienda for lunch. This hacienda also had a cenote for swimming and plenty of hammocks for relaxing after lunch. The whole day trip cost 350 pesos per person, which mainly just covered the transfer in a mini bus, as at the museum you had to pay an entrance free of 50 pesos per person and the lunch also had to be ordered and paid for separately. I didn't consider it a great value, but a very pleasant and educational day trip nevertheless.
Fancy a swim with a tiny crocodile?

Merida was a lovely place to spend a couple of days, despite being rather touristy with lots of souvenir shops and overly eager tour sales people. Definitely worth a visit in any case!
