Patikointia Cape Bretonissa - Hiking in Cape Breton

Muutaman päivän hengailun Halifaxissa jälkeen oli aika suunnata luonnon rauhaan, joten nappasimme auton alle ja lähdimme ajamaan kohti Cape Bretonin saarta. Saari on kuuluisa etenkin Cabot Trailista, joka lasketaan maailman kauneimpien ajoreittien joukkoon. Halusimme ajaa koko Cabot Trailin läpi kaikessa rauhassa neljän päivän aikana pysähtyen monta kertaa patikoimaan eri reittejä. Yövyimme ensimmäisen ja viimeisen yön Whycocomaghissa Bras d'or-järven rannalla ja kaksi yötä keskellä Cabot Trailia Pleasant Bayssa. Tämä suunnitelma toimi hyvin, koska ajomatkat eivät tulleet sietämättömän pitkiksi ja ehdimme nähdä paljon. Bear on the Lake Guest House oli ihana majatalo upeine järvimaisemineen. Muutaman minuutin ajomatkan päässä oli Provincial Park, jossa kävimme kiertämässä lyhyen (reilu 3 km) mutta jyrkkine mäkineen kuumana päivänä kohtuullisen vaativan Salt Mountain Trailin. Patikointi palkittiin uskomattoman kauniilla näköaloilla loputtomien havumetsien ja valtaisan järven yli.

Bras d'or Lake

After a couple of days in Halifax it was time to head out to the nature, so we rented a car and started our drive towards the island of Cape Breton. The island is famous for Cabot Trail, often mentioned as one of the most beautiful drives in the world. We wanted to take our time driving through it during four days, stopping for different hikes. We spent the first and the last night in Whycocomagh by the lake Bras d'or and two nights in the middle of the Cabot Trail in Pleasant Bay. This plan worked out well because this way the driving distances did not get overwhelmingly long and we got to see a lot. We stayed at the lovely Bear on the Lake guest house with its spectacular lake views. The Provincial Park was just a few minutes' drive away and we did the short (about 3 kilometres) but steep and, on a hot day, rather demanding Salt Mountain Trail. We were rewarded with incredible views over the endless pine forests and enormous lake.

The following day we took the scenic coastal road towards the National Park itself. Along the coast there are lots of tiny little villages, some which didn't even have a grocery store, let alone a restaurant or a liquor store. What is interesting about the villages is that as they were originally populated by immigrants from different countries, the accents and dialect vary from one village to another. In some villages they speak English with an Irish accent, in others they speak French, in some parts even Gaelic is still spoken. Luckily we stopped for lunch at the French-speaking village of Cheticamp where we also spotted a liquor store and stocked up on beer!

Driving in Cabot Trail

The most famous hiking route in Cape Breton National Park is the Skyline Trail which is conveniently located along the way. This is an easy hike without any elevation but it is relatively long - either 7,2 kilometres if you come back on the same trail or, if you want, you can do a longer loop of 9,4 kilometres. We decided to go for the loop and it was a great decision. In the beginning of the trail it was a little crowded, but that did not bother us. The views were absolutely amazing nevertheless! However, when turning to do the longer loop, the crowds dispersed and we actually started to get a little nervous in case a bear came along. Well, we didn't see a bear, but we did see a moose cow with her calf! It was just breath-taking to see that amazing animal so close by, eating away without apparently considering us any sort of a threat to her or her calf. I got tears in my eyes, it was so moving.

Pleasant Bayssa majaillessamme halusimme välttää liiallista ajamista, joten  pysyttelimme kylän tienoilla kierrellen lyhyempiä patikkareittejä nauttien luonnonrauhasta ja hiljaisuudesta. Vietimme aikaa myös hostellin lähellä olevalla rannalla - vaikka Atlantin vedet eivät ihan uimaan houkutelleetkaan, oli ihanan rentouttavaa istua mukavilla puisilla nojatuoleilla (näitä Adirondack-tuoleja näkee Kanadassa joka talon pihalla tai terassilla, myös rannalle niitä oli joku tuonut oletettavasti yleiseen käyttöön) kuunnellen aaltojen lipatusta.
Seuraavassa postauksessa lisää Cape Bretonin huippuhetkiä!
While staying in Pleasant Bay we wanted to avoid driving too much so we stayed close to the village, doing several shorter hikes, enjoying the peace and quiet. We also spent some time on the pebbly beach close to the hostel. Although the Atlantic waters were not inviting enough for a swim, it was lovely and relaxing to chill on the comfy armchairs (you can see these Adirondack chairs on the yards or terraces of every house in Canada and some kind soul had brought them to the beach for common use) listening to the waves.
Stay tuned for more Cape Breton highlights in the next post!
