Hurmaava Quebec City - Charming Quebec City

Historiallinen Quebec City uhkuu ranskalaista charmia. Odotimme innolla tutustumista tähän Pohjois-Amerikan eurooppalaisimmaksi kaupungiksi mainittuun paikkaan! Hostimme Daniel, noin kuusikymppinen herrasmies, tuli sovitusti noutamaan meitä juna-asemalta kello 6 tienoilla aamulla.

Historical Quebec City oozes French charm. We were really looking forward to getting to know this city known as the most European city of North America! Our host Daniel, a 60-something gentleman, waited for us at the train station at 6am as agreed. Our train journey had taken 19 hours and although the seats were fairly comfortable, we were still feeling the strain of the night on the train. After a much-needed shower and a nap we were ready to explore the old town with Daniel. A minor complication was that we don’t speak any French and Daniel does not speak much English, so our communication was a bit sketchy at times. We got along famously though! We walked around the huge Plains of Abraham, peaked inside the Citadel (a proper visit with a guided tour would have cost 16 CAD per person but you can have a quick look for free) and admired the most photographed hotel in the world, Chateau Frontenac from many different angles. The old town was a very busy and lively place on a beautiful sunny Saturday and especially the shopping street Petit Champlain was teeming with tourists. We must have walked at least ten kilometres, after which it was good to relax on Daniel’s terrace with a glass of wine and mixed French-English conversation.

Sunnuntaille Daniel olikin suunnitellut meille kunnon maakuntareissun Charlevoix’n alueella.

At the Montmorency Falls

For Sunday Daniel had planned a big day for us in the Charlevoix region. We started at the Montmorency Falls (entrance fee 12 CAD per car). Montmorency Falls are actually 30 metres taller than the Niagara Falls, although Niagara Falls are of course a lot wider. You can climb all the way up along the stairs next to the falls (400 steps!) and walk along the suspension bridge across the falls. There would also be zip-lining and via ferrata available but we were happy to just walk around this amazing place. From there we continued another 200 kilometres to a small town called Tadoussac. We did stop a few times along the way to take pictures of lovely scenery and cute little villages. Daniel had also prepared a picnic lunch for us, which we had to eat quickly though as the rain just started to drizzle down! Tadoussac is a nice little town that tourists flock to in the summer time with hopes of seeing beluga whales. You can do a boat trip to see the whales (from 65 CAD per person) but we got super-lucky and saw them on the way to the town, on the free ferry! Sure, it is hard to take very impressive pictures of them as they just quickly pop to the surface before disappearing into the depths again but in any case we saw them and that made us so happy!
Yes, that's a whale!

The next day we moved to our other host as agreed and stayed another couple of days with Stephanie. Stephanie was a lovely vegan girl, whose cute little parrot called Kiwi just melted our hearts! We spent a couple of more relaxed days hanging out in downtown and old harbour area before heading to the biggest city in Quebec province, the cosmopolitan Montreal.
